Championships Summary

August 3, 2008

What a wonderful championship meet today. I cannot thank everyone enough for everything each of you did today to make the day so special. I really don’t care what the score says, Del Prado is #1 and the best team in the league. I may sound biased, but I’m not. All of us should be so proud of our team.

Swimmers, what great races today. Del Prado didn’t have one single scratch or change in the meet. Very impressive. You all showed up on time (and it was sooo early) and ready to swim. We watched great races. It was so exciting to see some of you swim your very best ever today. We had so many new swimmers to our team who dropped so much time today in their races. You’ve come so far since your first practice back in may. I love to see that growth and success. Congratulations. We also had one pool record broken today–the 13-14 girls’ free relay team of Lindsey DeWilde, Elaine gates, Laura Klein, and Stephanie Doi broke a two-year-old record with a time of 1:51.67. Great race, girls.

Parents, I know I say it all the time, but thank you so much for helping run a great meet today. Did you see Del Prado’s representation?– Terry Beatty, Jay Strom, Ralph Costa, Martin Gates–just to name a few–held key positions in today’s meet. Thank you to the dawn patrol ( you know who you are) who came early (4:00 a.m.) to set up pop-ups for the team so we’d have shade and a nice spot to call home for the day. Thank you to Beth Borchers and her crew of parent helpers who did above-and-beyond in helping get the swimmers in the right places and all those other volunteer positions. What an amazing group of people you are.

Coaches, you make us proud. You seeded us a great meet and provided instruction and encouragement to help us reach our goals. Thank you for putting your heart and soul into our team these last 8 weeks or so. You are the very best. Just in case you were wondering split times on their relay, it went something like this: Jamie 31. something; Julianne 39.something; John 29.something; and Tom 27.something. Very good indeed!

Tomorrow is our team awards party and potluck BBQ. We will start serving dinner at 5:00 p.m. please bring something to share and your swim team board will provide the burgers, dogs, and drinks. The awards part of the evening will begin about 6:00 p.m. unfortunately, Coach Jamie will not be able to attend our party. She has a “real job”- related conference that she must attend before she begins her new job at Foothill. She will be on her way to Vancouver in the morning. Jamie, be safe, learn lots, and we’ll miss you.

Well, it’s been quite a week–from practice to pancakes, swim buddies to new friendships, chalk fairy visits to fantastic races–it’s been a pleasure to be part of this team all season. Thank you.

Go Del Prado!
Joan

Another beautiful day to be pool-side and watch great swimming.

Thank you, parent volunteers, for helping run a smooth (but a little long) meet today. a special thank you to Randy Vandiver for always bringing the DP pop-up to our away meets to provide shade for the coaches and me. On a hot sunny day like today it was very much appreciated!!

Swimmers, you swam great again today. We had some close races which were fun to watch. Thank you all for being on time and checking it with your coach and for cheering for your teammates. I love nothing more than seeing swimmers at the end of the pool cheering on their teammates. Beautiful. I think that’s one of the things that make you all extra-special swimmers and people. You should be proud. I also loved the 9-10 boys’ Stingray T-shirts. Very cute. Congratulations today to Jake Newman for bettering his own free record to a fast 31.57. Coach Julianne is asking for help again from all the “big kid” helpers at all of this week’s practices for the 6&u and 7-8. You know who you are…

Coaches, thank you for everything you do for our team. You have one last important meet to seed. Good luck. I also can’t wait to see you all swim in the coaches’ relay at the end of the champ meet next week. Swimmers/Parents, you’ll love watching this race. i believe the line-up will be coach Jamie swimming back, coach Julianne swimming breast, coach John swimming fly (remember that from last year??!!!), and coach Tom swimming free.

Volunteers
There are still spots available to volunteer for the champ meet. Please email Beth Borchers (beth@bborchers.com) if you can help. Here is what is still available:

  • Timing area monitor, 2nd shift
  • Clerk-of-the-course, 2nd shift
  • Take down after the meet (one spot still needed)
  • 6&u girls, 2nd half (two spots needed)
  • 6&u boys, 1st half
  • 9-10 boys, 2nd half (two spots needed)

Championships

The final meet which is the championship meet is next Saturday, August 2. The meet will begin at 8:00 a.m. our warm-ups are from 6:50-7:10 in lanes 11-15. Yes, I said 6:50. Sorry. The scratch meeting will be at 7:00 a.m. all swimmers must be checked in with their coach by 6:40 a.m. please plan accordingly. This meet is in Livermore and it will take you longer to park/unload/find your coach, etc. plan for a long day. This meet is usually over somewhere between 3-4 p.m. there will be a snack bar. Bring lots of dry towels, activities to keep you interested, sunscreen, drinks. Think of it as a camping day. We will be sitting in the same area as last year. You will be able to access the meet program online at the league website (trivalleyswim.us) on Thursday morning. I would suggest you print out a copy for yourself.

Year End BBQ and Awards
On Sunday, August 3 will be our year-end awards BBQ and banquet. Your swim team board will provide all the burgers, hotdogs, and drinks. We ask you to bring a side dish, salad, fruit, or dessert to share. This meal will begin at 5:00 p.m. our awards ceremony will begin at 6:00. We may even surprise you with a swim team board vs. cabana club pool board relay swim after the ceremony. No promises…but maybe it will happen. If you can help Cindi Sabatini with set-up or clean-up, please email her. (cindisabatini@yahoo.com)

Swim Buddies
You may have noticed small slips of paper going around today regarding swim buddies. This is a fun thing we do for the final week of the season. Your swimmer should know who their buddy is. Slips were given out this morning. This activity/program is to encourage swimmers to get to know another swimmer. Usually you will do something for your buddy at every practice this week and at the champ meet. this doesn’t have to be a big expense. Making your buddy a sign to encourage them, a treat at the snack bar after practice, a certificate that says you’ll play a game of cards with them at the champ meet, a special drink or treat–these are the things we suggest. If you have any questions regarding this, please talk to the coaches. They’re in charge of this.

Whew, I think that’s it for now. I’m sorry this note is so long. I guess I had a lot to say. I have the pleasure of attending former Coach Erin cooper’s wedding tonight. I’ll try and take some pictures. Look on our website tomorrow for them. Take good care and enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Go Stingrays,
Joan

Complete Meet Results

Another great meet today. I will have to admit, though, my energy level was down from the high on Wednesday night.

Thank you to all the parent volunteer for helping run another fast and efficient meet today and for getting your swimmers to the pool ready and on time. We only had one scratch today due to an illness. That is so impressive.

Thank you, swimmers, for again trying your best and giving us good stuff to cheer about.

Coaches, you’ve been busy this past week seeding great meets and running informative and social practices. Thank you for all your time. enjoy some rest this weekend.

Our next meet (and final dual meet of the season–already) is Saturday, July 26 against Pleasanton meadows at their pool. Here are the pool directions for next meet. All swimmers must be at the pool and checked in with their coach by 8:00 a.m. the scratch meeting will be at 8:15, and the meet will begin at 9:00. Meadow’s pool only has 5 lanes so that meet may run a bit longer. If your swimmer will not be swimming at that meet, Monday is the deadline for letting their coach know. Also, if your swimmer won’t be at the champ meet, please let us know as soon as possible. we are now at 12 out. We need 17 out. I have my league championship planning meeting this Tuesday. Beth Botchers should have sign-ups for the champ meet either Wednesday morning or Thursday night. Please be on the look-out to help volunteer for this meet.

That’s it for now. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.
Go stingrays!

Joan

PS. Sammy says he is still sleeply and will be posting pictures later today.

About all I can say after tonight is, WOW!!, what a great meet.

Stingrays, hold your heads high. You have so much to be proud of: We didn’t have a single scratch tonight, we started the meet early/on time, you swam so fast, you cheered so loud, your spirit was unbelievable, your pool area was beautiful with signs, streamers, and balloons, and we ended the meet early. Just so you know, there were 160 personal best swims tonight. That number doesn’t include faster relay times–just 160 individual personal bests. that is so great!! your coaches and this coordinator couldn’t be prouder of all of you.

Your coaches say you’re ROCK STARS and really STEPPED UP tonight. Thank you. Special congratulations to these record-breaking stingrays: Taylor Peterson bettered her own  record in the 15-18 girls’ free; Jake Newman set a new 9-10 boys’ free; and Jake Newman, Tommy Sabatini, Jacob Banke, and Taylor Smith broke a 12-year-old pool record in the 9-10 boys’ medley relay. Fantastic!

Coaches, you seeded us a great meet tonight. I think those glow sticks really motivated those swimmers. Thank you so much for all the time and energy you put into our swimmers and our team. you are the best!

Parents, we couldn’t do all of this without all of your help. Thank you to all our volunteers tonight. a special thank you to Margo Tschirky for stepping up and being the 9-10 girls’ line-up parent at the last minute.

It was also so great to see former coaches Erin Cooper, Kelly Kramer, Mark Hudson, and Jeff Torbeck at the meet tonight– along with so many former swimmers and families. It felt like homecoming.

I also would like to thank Kim Beatty and the swim team board (plus a few extras who always help) for cooking up a great meal last night and for hosting a fun pasta feed. I told the kids that meal would guarantee fast swims. I think it worked.

Next Swim Meet

Our next meet is Saturday, July 19 (our last home meet of the season) against Ruby Hill at our pool. All swimmers need to be checked in with their coach by 8:00 a.m. the scratch meeting is at 8:15 and the meet will start at 9:00. Coach Julianne will be missing this meet (and these next two practice days). Coaches Jamie and Taylor will be helping out for her.

Please let us know asap if your swimmer will not be swimming in our last dual meet or at champs. As of right now we only have 5 swimmers out for champs. We need to have 17 out. If you know your swimmer won’t be swimming or if you’d like to volunteer not to have them swim at that meet, we would really like to know as soon as possible.

Well, that’s it for now. Tonight was so much fun. Rest well.
Happy and proud to be a Stingray,
Joan

PS. Swimmers, more photos will be posted later, as Sammy Stingray just received more photos from Steve Kruschke.
